July 7, 2018, Saturday - First Free Saturday at Minneapolis Sculpture Garden

Time: see schedule below

Location: Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, Walker Art Center

First Free Saturday

Do you like animals? We do too! Join us for a bonanza in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden celebrating our fuzzy and feathered friends. Walk your dog in the inaugural Pooch Parade, make a critter mask, and practice your drawing skills with live animal models.

Free First Saturdays feature free gallery admission on the first Saturday of every month, plus performances, games, art-making, and kid’s films from 10 am to 3 pm. Family friendly food options are available or bring something from home to snack on in the lounge or in the garden.

Performance: Mil’s Trills
12 pm

Brooklyn-based children’s music group Mil’s Trills fills the Garden with family friendly tunes that will get you grooving.

Two time Parents’ Choice Award–winning Mil’s Trills is dedicated to creating positive, inclusive experiences for young audiences and families. Led by Amelia Robinson, who writes and performs original tunes, this performance features local musicians Peter Vircks, Pete Hennig, Jordan Hedlund, and Ben Kummer.

Event: Pooch Parade led by Brass Messengers
11 am

Bring your pet for the first annual Pooch Parade. The Brass Messengers will lead a joyful troupe of kids, adults, and all creatures great and small through the Garden.

The ten-member, Minneapolis-based street band Brass Messengers play a variety of musical styles as well as originals inspired by global sources, including music of Africa, the Caribbean, and Balkans.

Art Activity: Drawing Dogs
10 am–3 pm

Practice your sketching skills with real dogs as your models. We’ll provide the drawing boards, paper, pencils and dogs—you bring your creativity.

Local dog training company K9SF is providing our special models. Based in Minneapolis, K9SF offers one-on-one training that is custom tailored to you and your dog’s needs.

Art Activity: Critter Masks
10 am–3 pm

Don’t have an animal? No problem, you can become one! Build a mask modeled after your favorite animal with artist Mica Lee Anders. Wear it with pride in the parade and around the Garden.

Mica Lee Anders is a COMPAS visual artist who teaches children of all ages how to create meaningful, well-composed photographs, combining artistic concepts and techniques with fun, age-appropriate activities.

Tour: Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
