Horace Cleveland and the Creation of the Minneapolis Parks System
Horace W.S. Cleveland was the principal visionary in the creation of Minneapolis' famed park system. A contemporary colleague and kindred spirit to Frederick Law Olmstead, the creator of New York's Central Park, Cleveland saw the vital importance of park lands in the hectic urban landscape of the late 19th century and the need for open spaces to a crowded and rapidly growing population. Minneapolis Parks historian Dave Smith tells the story of Cleveland’s far-sighted vision in the creation and development of one of the country’s premier park systems.
