Wild Ones 2015 Design With Nature Conference - Changing Tactics

Changing Tactics

Nearly every week, we hear about a new discovery on the interconnections between plants, animals, insects, and people. With these discoveries, we have the opportunity to rethink how we manage landscapes. Our speakers illustrate three fresh approaches to design with beauty in harmony with nature now and in the future.

CONFERENCE SPEAKERS

Travis Beck, a landscape architect, creates designs using plant succession models to anticipate changes that occur as a landscape matures. Travis draws upon the latest research projects conducted at Mt. Cuba Center in Delaware for his insights.

Wiley Buck, a restoration ecologist, offers case studies adapting grazing techniques to control invasive plants and increase plant diversity in rural and urban settings.

Leslie Brandt, a climate specialist, shares results from a pilot study adopting forest management practices to urban areas in response to climate change. A Chicago-based initiative will serve as a template for other communities around the nation to reframe their planting programs for improved biodiversity.
