August 5, 2016, Friday - Acting Black at the Guthrie (2 nights)
Time: 7:30pm
Location: Dowling Studio, Guthrie Theater, 818 Second Street South
In light of recent local and national events, the Guthrie invites you to join a conversation about racism through the lens of Carlyle Brown’s powerful solo project, Acting Black. Part spoken word, part stand-up, part TED Talk and inspired by the comedic styles and traditions of the likes of Richard Pryor, George Carlin and the outrageous Lord Buckley, Acting Black riffs on the roots of American racism and its consequences for all of us. From a single night in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1828, to the racial conflicts we endure to this day, Acting Blackbrilliantly explores the appropriation of the African American narrative. By turns humorous and haunting, the piece compels audiences to laugh out loud while simultaneously being hit in the gut. Tickets are free; Acting Black will be followed by a discussion with the audience. The Guthrie is committed to offering periodic community gatherings in response to local and national current events, creating a forum in which citizens can grapple with today's biggest topics and questions
