September 11, 2010, Saturday - 18th Annual James Page Blubber Run

The 18th Annual James Page Blubber Run will start and finish at Father Hennepin Park on the East bank of Mississippi.

Registration, Race Number and Shirt Pick-up opens at 8:00am, and the race starts at 10:01am

If you're not a speedy runner, don't fret -- costumes, creativity and a great sense of fun count most in this 5K race. Bring your friends, bring the pet, bring the kids, wear your goofiest outfit, just show up and join in the fun. About half of the runners do it in costume; the other half are just out for a good run and some very entertaining people watching.

There will be lots of prizes for the Best Costume, Best Group Costume, Best Pet/Human Costume, Best Kid/Adult Collaboration, Fastest Male Runner and Fastest Female Runner. A certified race clock will be at the finish line -- yes, it's a real 5K, with the extra trimmings.

Complete with traditional German music, polka dancing and food and beer. The historic and quaint backdrop of Saint Anthony Main and the natural beauty of the Mississippi River bank make for the idyllic Oktoberfest setting. Admission and music will be FREE for all ages. I.Ds will be required to obtain a wristband for purchasing beer and wine.

Patrons will enjoy authentic German food from an array of great imported beers in our Biergartens. Join in the fun and games such as the beer barrel roll and the Hammerschlagen (nail driving).

Oktoberfest fall festival is located along Main Street S.E. on the banks of the Mississippi River adjacent to St. Anthony Main. Most of the events are held under tents and under the Central Ave Bridge, protected from the weather, so the event will be held rain or shine.

Time: 10:00am

Backstage tours offer a behind-the-scenes look at how Guthrie shows are taken from script to stage. In 45 minutes, you'll visit the Guthrie's signature thrust and proscenium stages; enter the expansive scene shop where sets are built and painted, and learn how they're transported to each stage; visit the shop where costumes are expertly stitched, fabrics dyed and wigs constructed; and explore the rehearsal rooms where company members prepare for performance.

Backstage tours are scheduled Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m. $10 per person; $6 for subscribers, students and seniors. Call the Box Office at 612.377.2224 or order online. The Box Office opens for backstage tours and in-person sales at 9:30 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

September 9, 2010, Thursday - Hip Hop Concert at MacPhail Center for Music

Hip-hop summer camp students from McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul and MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis are collaborating for a Hip Hop Concert on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. featuring performances by both groups. The concert will be held in Antonello Hall at MacPhail. Admission is free.

 

The MacNally Smith Hip-Hop camp was held June 26 – July 1, with 36 students ages 13-21. At camp the students studied hip-hop production, hip-hop performance, and music business. Instructors at MacNally Smith included Sean’ Twinkie Jiggles’ McPherson, Brandon and Zach Bagaason, Toki Wright, Frank Sentwali, and Joseph Mabbott.

 

MacPhail’s Hip-Hop Camp was held Aug. 23-17 with 16 students ages 12-17. During the week students studied beat making, lyric writing, stage presence, mic technique and beat boxing, with a final performance at the historic Capri Theater. Instructors included Desdamona, TruthMaze, Tish Jones and Carnage.

September 6, 2010, Monday - Women's Work: Walking Tour with History Player Eva Valesh

Take a walking tour led by costumed History Player Eva Valesh, whose undercover reporting for the Saint Paul Globe in 1888 and 1889 exposed the harsh working conditions of women in Minneapolis. Learn about factory life for girls at the North Star Woolen Mill, still standing at the west end of the Stone Arch Bridge. Valesh, a labor writer and orator, known by her pen name Eva Gay, served as labor editor for the Saint Paul Globe, a skilled orator for the National Farmer’s Alliance and labor editor for the Minneapolis Tribune. She went on to national acclaim, working for Samuel Gompers as assistant editor of the American Federationist.

Join the ICC as they collaborate with the Mill City Farmers Market in celebrating all things Italian! It is Italy at the Market on Saturday, September 4th, from 8 AM until 1 PM.

9:30 AM - enjoy Italian Opera by Meredith Cain-Nielsen near the demo kitchen. Be prepared to be transported back to Italy as she shares her vocal treasures with us to get our Italian journey started!

 

10 AM - there will be a cooking demonstration with market chef Nick Schneider and special ICC guest Andrea Scarpa inside the market pavillion at the demo kitchen featuring dishes from the region of Piedmont.

 11 AM -12 PM - musical entertainment will be provided by local singers from the Minnesota Opera, including students from the vocal training program, Project Opera. Come and enjoy a morning of rousing and romantic favorites from great Italian Operas and beautiful selections from famous collections of Neopolitan songs.
