November 9, 2011, Wednesday - A Sip of Science at Aster Cafe

Time: 5:30pm

Location: Aster Cafe, 125 SE Main Street

A Sip of Science:  A Sense of Where You Are: Science and Knowing on the Mississippi River

A SIP OF SCIENCE bridges the gap between science and culture in a setting that bridges the gap between brain and belly.  Food, beer, and learning are on the menu in a happy hour forum in which researchers put science in context through storytelling.

In our increasingly connected world, it's easy to be overwhelmed by the amount of information at your fingertips.  There is a growing movement to build programs that can synthesize material on a topic from a vast number of sources so we can spend our time connecting and acting on important news and events rather than having to scrounge for the information ourselves.

The River Life Program connects University teaching, research and programs to off-campus partners who are working toward a sustainable river and inclusive planning for our river future.  The program utilizes diverse digital platforms and makes strong use of social media to create unique learning opportunities -- students learn from practitioners, river agency staff network more with each other, and communities up and down the river can share their experiences.

Join River Life Coordinator Pat Nunnally for an exploration of the Mississippi River, what we know about it, and what it means.  After a brief visual tour, Nunnally will engage the audience on a highly interactive exploration of the Mississippi River close to home, right outside our doors, in fact, at the Aster Cafe.  (Not to worry:  we'll stay inside, and explore through images and discussion).

This talk takes place during happy hour at the Aster Cafe. Food and drink available for purchase.

November 8, 2011, Tuesday - Peter Heegaard Book Event at Central Library

Time: 7:00pm

More Bang for Your Buck

Businessman, philanthropist, and author, Peter Heegaard will share his new book, More Bang for Your Buck: Good News for Taxpayers, Public Officials, Philanthropists & Non-profit Managers.

Recently published by Minneapolis-based Nodin Press, More Bang for Your Buck describes how modern economic analysis can lead to wiser use of society’s resources to better human lives. Drawing on a variety of national studies and think tank publications, Peter develops a convincing case for long-term investment in people’s lives through neighborhood organizations, government aid programs, early-childhood education funding, and other means.

This program should be of interest to civic-minded individuals interested in economics, nonprofits, and looking at a new way to address the country’s greatest societal challenges.

Peter Heegaard is a former trust banker who has championed the connection of business people to community through such initiatives as Urban Adventure and the One Percent Club, an organization that enlists people to contribute 1% or more of their net worth annually to tax-deductible causes. He is the editor of An Investment Letter for Minnesota Philanthropists and author of Heroes Among Us: Social Entrepreneurs Working to Build Strong Families and Communities.

November 6, 2011, Sunday - NT Live Filmed Presentation of The Kitchen by Arnold Vesker at the Guthrie

Time:  1:00pm

Location: McGuire Proscenium, Guthrie, 818 2nd Street South

The Guthrie Theater presents an NT Live FILMED PRESENTATION of The Kitchen by Arnold Vesker.

1950s London. In the kitchen of an enormous West End restaurant, the orders are piling up: a post-war feast of soup, fish, cutlets, omelettes and fruit flans.

Fifteen hundred customers an' half of them eating fish. I had to start work on a Friday.

Thrown together by their work, chefs, waitresses and porters from across Europe - English, Irish, German, Jewish - argue and flirt as they race to keep up. Peter, a high-spirited young cook, seems to thrive on the pressure. In between preparing dishes, he manages to strike up an affair with married waitress Monique, the whole time dreaming of a better life. But in the all-consuming clamour of the kitchen, nothing is far from the brink of collapse.

We all said we wouldn't last the day, but tell me - what is there a man can't get used to?
