December 21, 2013, Saturday - National Theatre Live: The Habit of Art at St. Anthony Main Theatre

Time: 1:00pm

Location: St. Anthony Main Theatre, 115 Main Street SE

NT Live is a groundbreaking initiative of London's National Theatre that broadcasts the world's finest stage performances to cinema screens in 22 countries around the globe. Through a partnership with the Film Society of Minneapolis/St. Paul, National Theatre Live has moved from the Guthrie across the river to the Film Society's St. Anthony Main Theatre. Tickets are available through the Film Society and are $20 Regular; $15 Film Society members.

The Habit of Art

Benjamin Britten, sailing uncomfortably close to the wind with his new opera, Death in Venice, seeks advice from his former collaborator and friend, W H Auden. During this imagined meeting, their first for twenty-five years, they are observed and interrupted by, amongst others, their future biographer and a young man from the local bus station.

Alan Bennett’s play is as much about the theatre as it is about poetry or music. It looks at the unsettling desires of two difficult men, and at the ethics of biography. It reflects on growing old, on creativity and inspiration, and on persisting when all passion’s spent: ultimately, on the habit of art.

December 18, 2013, Wednesday - Public Skating at the Metrodome

Time: 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Location: The Dome (both levels)

Rollerdome - Let's Go Skating!

The upper and lower concourses of the Metrodome become the Rollerblade Rollerdome, annually hosting thousands of inline skaters who come to relax, exercise, train, socialize, or just watch others turn endless effortless laps on the roughly half-mile smooth concrete loop. Park your car in the free lot adjacent to Gate D and enter the revolving doors. (Because trapped air is what keeps the Dome domey, trying to use a conventional door will expel you quicker than a sneeze.)

Admission is $6.50 for adults, $5.50 for students, and $4.50 for kids. Optional skate rentals cost an additional $5.00 per pair of well-maintained and up-to-date Rollerblade inline skates. Coat/shoe check and safety gear are free, but neither is mandatory. "Skate at your own risk" signs might intimidate the newbie, but you really couldn't ask for a more forgiving environment in which to learn--a level, debris-free surface, ample elbow room on even the most crowded nights and free skate tips qualified instructors make this the ideal place to take the evolutionary step from plodding flat feet to speedy wheeled wonders.

December 16, 2013, Monday - My Mother Has Four Noses at The Guthrie

December 9, 2013, Monday - Sounds of Blackness

Time: 7:30pm

Location: Dowling Studio, Guthrie, 818 South 2nd Street

My Mother Has Four Noses

Jonatha Brooke's mom did have four noses, and at least as many names. She was a published poet, a clown, a Christian Scientist. And she had Alzheimer's. But in her final years, her mother raised her theatrics to a new level. Their shared passion for words and music, and their unflagging humor stand as a testament to their enduring relationship. In this powerful, musical one-woman show, featuring ten new songs to complement the performance, acclaimed singer/songwriter Jonatha Brooke tells a very unusual love story of a mother and daughter.

My Mother Has Four Noses has played to sold out houses at the Playwrights’ Center, the Warner Theater in Torrington, CT, and World Café Live for the Philadelphia Fringe Festival.

Also playing December 17, 7:30pm.
