Location: Minnesota Center for Book Arts, 1011 Washington Avenue South

Use herbs and spices, such as crumpled sage, grated cinnamon and nutmeg, too. Dress for mess with waterproof shoes.

Join Ellen Ferrari for Saturday mornings of family book arts fun! Each workshop starts off with a story and game to warm up your creativity and then dives into a book arts project. Workshops accommodate a range of developmental levels so that adults and children (or) adult/child teams may choose to work together or side-by-side. Each participant receives supplies to use during the workshop, but may choose to bring one set home if working with his or her partner. Ellen will provide older children with suggestions for extending their learning.

November 14, 2015, Saturday - Come, You Taste: Iron Range Cookbook Author Event at Mill City Museum

Times: 12:30pm - 2:30pm

Location: Mill City Museum, 704 2nd Street South

Join MNHS Press author B.J. Carpenter for a series of cooking demonstrations based on her new book Come, You Taste: Family Recipes from the Iron Range. Potica or kolache, sarma or braciole, lutefisk or baccala, fattigman or lefse—Minnesota’s Iron Range has a culinary language all its own. The pursuit of rich iron ore in the early 20th century drew workers who hailed from Finland, Sweden, Slovenia, Italy and many other places, and as the men went to work in the mines, their families adjusted together to this new land.

Cooking demonstrations will be at 12:30 pm and 2 pm in the Baking Lab. After each demonstration, copies of the book will be available for purchase and a book signing.

November 12, 2015, Thursday - Downtown: Minneapolis in the 1970s Exhibit Opening and Reception at the Mill City Museum

Time: 6:00 pm

Location: Mill City Museum, 704 South 2nd Street

Downtown: Minneapolis in the 1970s Exhibit Opening and Reception

In the 1970s, Dayton's was in its prime, the new Nicollet Mall was full of people, the Foshay Tower was still king and the IDS Center was beginning its rise. The skyway system was not yet born so bustling sidewalks teamed with shoppers and businessmen. Mike Evangelist, a 17-year-old from the suburbs, turned his lens to the scenes around him, capturing a vibrant and rapidly changing city. Forty years later, he unearthed this trove of images.

Explore this exhibit of framed photographs and a slideshow, including some unpublished images, with an opening reception. A cash bar and food from D'Amico & Sons Cafe will be available for purchase. The exhibit is a companion to the book of the same name from the Minnesota Historical Society Press, with photographs by Mike Evangelist and text by Andy Sturdevant. The exhibit will be on display through April 3, 2016.

November Sip of Science - Bee Support: People Helping Bees and Bees Helping People

Honey bees and wild, native bees are now faced with a multitude of challenges that include a lack of floral resources, pests, diseases and pesticides. To address these issues, the Bee Squad was founded in 2011 by Dr. Marla Spivak of the UMN Bee Lab to support both beekeepers and the public in their efforts to help bees. As the outreach arm of the Bee Lab, the Bee Squad communicates the latest bee research to audiences that are passionate about helping bees.  Bee Squad has grown significantly and expanded their programs to include innovative ways to not just help bees, but also help people. Now Bee Veterans, Bee Arts and projects that train others who might not have had access to beekeeping are part of the Bee Squad. Additionally, the Bee Squad has launched a national beekeeper citizen science project in an effort to fight the deadly mite pest, Varroa destructor. Come learn more about the research and outreach mission of the Bee Squad!

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Becky Masterman has led the Bee Squad program since 2013.  She graduated from the UMN Twin Cities first with a BA (major in history, minor in biology) and then obtained a Ph.D. degree in Entomology under the direction of Dr. Marla Spivak studying honey bee hygienic behavior and neurobiology.  For the last three years, Becky has been equally obsessed with trying to keep bees healthy and her newly found passion for traveling the world to attend heavy metal and rock concerts.

A SIP OF SCIENCE bridges the gap between science and culture in a setting that bridges the gap between brain and belly.  Food, beer, and learning are on the menu in a happy hour forum that puts science in context through storytelling.

No cover; food and drink available for purchase.

November 6, 2015, Friday - At It Again with Stuart Pimsler from Stuart Pimsler Dance and Theater at The Loft

Time: 7:00pm

Location: The Loft Literary Center, at Open Book (Performance Hall), 1011 Washington Ave

Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater (SPDT) is an internationally-recognized performance company that has continued to attract critical acclaim for its "theater of the heart and mind." For more than thirty-six years, SPDT has created work often inspired by literary sources from the classical to the contemporary.

SPDT has garnered attention for its compelling and poignant performance work, and commitment to education and community inclusive programs. The company’s programs give voice to those populations who typically do not have an opportunity to see their lives as the focal point for arts exploration. SPDT has been recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts for “Best Practices” in the field of Arts and Healthcare and The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as a “national model” for community programs and ability to be inclusive of a wide range of cultural groups.

Selected by CityPages as Twin Cities “Artist of the Year” in 2004, Stuart Pimsler is celebrating thirty-five years as Artistic Co–Director of SPDT. His work has been honored with Choreography Fellowships from the McKnight Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts as well as a Major Fellowship and six Individual Fellowships from the Ohio Arts Council. Mr. Pimsler has been commissioned by the Guthrie Theater, the Lila Wallace Arts Partners Fund, National Performance Network Creation Fund, the Jerome Foundation, the Wexner Center, University of Minnesota, and the Walker Art Center, among others. Mr. Pimsler's first children's play, My Grandmother's Tsotchkes: Tales of a Gambling Grandmother had its national premiere in March 2010 at SteppingStone Theatre, Saint Paul. He and his partner, Suzanne Costello, are currently in the process of writing a book about SPDT's innovative and longstanding work in the field of arts & healthcare.

Minneapolis-based choreographer, writer and director Stuart Pimsler will offer a preview of his newest solo work "At it Again." Directed by Suzanne Costello, "At it Again" is a homage to American author Philip Roth whom Pimsler has admired throughout his career. Pimsler is completing a fan letter to Roth and, through this theatrical device, has a conversation with the renowned author. In trying to understand his attraction, Pimsler uncovers certain personal connections to Roth while commenting on the author's own controversial history.

This performance will be followed by a discussion with Stuart Pimsler and Suzanne Costello about how the literary arts have had a lifelong influence on their work.

Suzanne Costello joined Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater in New York City in 1979 and became its Artistic Co-Director in 1984. During her career with the company, she has been highlighted as a performer, choreographer, teacher, and rehearsal director. As Director of Arts & Education and Arts & Healthcare Programs for the company, she coordinates and facilitates the many community-inclusive projects SPDT has come to be known for nationally and internationally.

Ms. Costello's choreographic work has been honored with three Individual Artist Fellowships from the Ohio Arts Council and has been commissioned by national dance companies and individual artists. She directed and choreographed Cats for Broadway at Iroquois, Louisville; Go, Dog, Go! for Metro Theater Company, St. Louis, and Stage One, Louisville; and choreographed Grimm Tales for Children’s Theatre Company, Minneapolis. She has twice been a Cowles Guest Artist as well as Affiliate Faculty for six years at the University of Minnesota. She has also been a guest artist at colleges and universities throughout the U.S. and abroad.

A $5-$10 suggested admission fee is associated with this event.
