Time: Noon and 1 pm

Location: Northeast Recreation Center, 1530 Johnson Street NE

Free Positive Sports Parenting Workshop

Parents and Guardians impact their children’s lives like no other people can…in sports as in every other aspect. Parents and Guardians, even those millions who coach their own kids, do best by their children when focusing on sports as a developmental opportunity, rather than a do-or-die, win-at-all-cost proposition.

This Free 45-min workshop will guide parents in:

  • Assessing their children’s goals and desires in youth sports in comparison with their own
  • How to talk with your child about practices, games and what they are learning through sports
  • How to enact and reinforce PCA’s major principles: Mastery of Sport (Not Just Scoreboard Results), which values effort, learning and bouncing back from mistakes and adversity
  • Filling Emotional Tanks, with the correct mix of truthful, specific praise and constructive criticism
  • Honoring the Game through appropriate sideline behavior and interaction with coaches.

Parents attending any of these workshops receive a copy of Positive Sports Parenting by PCA Founder Jim Thompson.

Space is limited! All attendees will receive Mn Twins Baseball game tickets!  Register today

This Land Like a Mirror Turns You Inward will be on view at Truckstop Gallery (20 Grove St. on Nicollet Island) Wednesday (10am–5pm), Thursday and Friday (12–9:30pm). The opening reception is on Friday, March 29 from 5-9pm.

March 29, 2019, Friday - Chronicled in Clay: Ceramics and the Art of the Story Opening Reception at MCBA

Time: 6p - 9p

Location: Minnesota Center for Book Arts, Washingtion Avenue S

Chronicled in Clay: Ceramics and the Art of the Story

Chronicled in Clay: Ceramics and the Art of the Story examines how contemporary artists express narratives in clay through text, imagery, multiples, and sequence. The jurors, Tetsuya Yamada (artist and faculty at the University of Minnesota), Monica Edwards Larson (MCBA Board member and artist / proprietress of Sister Black Press), and Torey Erin(MCBA Exhibitions and Artist Programs Manager) have composed an exhibition that provokes new perspectives and challenges traditional ideas of narrative and linear story telling through clay form. At a time when empathy, understanding, and sensitivity are needed more than ever, storytelling through visual art is an important, accessible means of expression.

We are looking forward to an intriguing and inspiring exhibition with the following participating artists:

Eileen Cohen, Minneapolis, MN
Derek Prescott, Columbia Heights, MN
Corie J. Cole, Colorado Springs, CO
Teri Power, Amery, WI
Paula McCartney, Minneapolis, MN
Nicole Roberts Hoiland, Saint Paul, MN
Stefana McClure, Newburgh, NY
Molly Streiff, Missoula, MT
Jennifer Rose Wolken, Springfield, MO

Through abstract and iconic sculptures, the work in this exhibition will bring forth the often overlooked, but common immaterial objects we are surrounded by in our daily lives. Co-curated by Sculptors Andrea Marquis and Amanda Salov

Every March, Ceramophiles of all kinds—makers, educators, scientist, collectors, and other interested parties—convene for a five-day meeting of the minds (and hands) to partake in the largest art-related conference in the United States. The vast National Conference of the Education of Ceramics Arts (NCECA) programming varies from lectures to demonstrations and exhibitions. From March 26 to March 30 2019, ceramicists from all over the country will gather in Minneapolis to examine and discuss the state of clay.

Sculptors Andrea Marquis and Amanda Salov teamed up with Gamut Gallery in conjunction with NCECA to present Other Objects, an exhibition of five established Ceramic Artist exploring the creation of immaterial objects with the visceral material of clay. Not to be confused with ephemeral things, Other Objects are non-material things that include holes, voids, tunnels, cavities, knots, and shadows. These parasitical objects depend on material but are themselves immaterial. Through their work, these five artists explore these other objects and how their dependence on their clay hosts.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Del Harrow uses processes ranging from direct hand-building with coils and slabs of clay to computer aided design, parametric modelling, and computer-controlled machines for fabrication. Del lives in Fort Collins, Colorado, where he teaches sculpture, digital fabrication, and ceramics at Colorado State University. His work has been exhibited at The Milwaukee Art Museum, The Denver Art Museum, The Arizona State University Art Museum, The Museum of Fine Art in Boston, and is featured in the permanent collection of the Arizona State University Art Museum. He recently completed a permanent installation for US State Department in a new Embassy in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.

Jeff Campana has explored the potential within the act of deconstructing and reconstructing familiar and iconic pottery language and form. In his latest works, he utilizes computer tools to generate a vast modular library of formal fragments from which he assembles and casts unified composite vessels and sculptures. Jeff is an Assistant Professor of Art at Kennesaw State University near Atlanta, Georgia. He exhibits nationally and has been a long-term Artist in Residence at the renowned Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena, Montana.

Ling Chun is a Hong Kong-born ceramics artist who likes to play with hair. A beauty school dropout, she received her MFA in ceramics at Rhode Island School of Design in 2016 and has introduced hair into her ceramics instead of styling it. Chun has been in several international renowned artist residency programs, including a long-term residency at Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana (2016-18). She has also received a Matsutani Fellowship, Lilian Fellowship and a RISD travel grant for oversea residencies including c.r.e.t.a. Rome and Aquatopia in Puebla, Mexico. Recently, her achievement in the field of ceramics granted her extended stay in the United States on an O-1B Visa recognizing her extraordinary ability in the arts. She is now a long-term resident of Pottery Northwest in Seattle, Washington (2018-20), where she continuous her studio practice. She is the founder of HIDDENFOODPROJECT, a public art project that runs across the country.

Amanda Salov examines the idea of a moment in physical form: temporal, fragile, and fleeting. Her most recent series “Peaks and Valleys” is a physical manifestation of many things: watching the monitors of a loved one in an ICU room, an enchainment of the successes and failures of research, living in an isolated valley, the work of hanging lace, and a panoramic view of many mountains and valleys. Raised in rural Wisconsin, Amanda has shown throughout the country and abroad. Amanda will participate in the Mid-Atlantic Keramik Exchange in Reykjavík this June and is a participant in the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale in Korea this year. She lives in Seattle.

Andrea Marquis has recently created a series of sculptures exploring the connection between garden and paradise. Starting with large slabs of coils, she creates sculptures that explore light interacting with negative spaces, which she describes as “the capturing and materializing of non-material entities.” Andrea’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. She is currently an Artist in Residence at the Clay Studio in Philadelphia and teaches ceramics and 3-D design at the Community College of Philadelphia.

March 27, 2019, Wednesday - Intro to Wine: Understanding Europe at North Loop

Time: 6:30p - 8:30p

Location:North Loop Wine and Spirits, 218 Washington Avenue No

Intro to Wine: Understanding Europe

Twin Cities Wine Education is proud to present the best overview class available on the big three wine countries of Europe: France, Italy, and Spain

ULTIMATE INTRO TO WINE: THE WINES OF EUROPE
When you first start to learn about wine, it is easier to learn about California, Australian, and South American wines for several reasons. First, these places (especially the west coast of America) are familiar to us and we know how to pronounce the locations. Secondly, the grape variety is often presented on the label, simplifying the understanding of what’s in the bottle. And lastly, they are the majority of wines available in most wine shops in the United States.

Then something strange and wonderful happens… maybe it’s a bottle of Puligny-Montrachet from France, or a Soave Classico from Italy, or a Priorat from Spain.

Whatever it may be, you find yourself intrigued by the wonderful taste and aromas, which are so different from American wines. You wonder just what it is that you are enjoying. Picking up the bottle, you look hard to discover what grape you are drinking, to no avail. Why is European wine so concerned about the place with barely a mention of what grapes are involved? These labels are confusing to many, so where do you possibly start when learning about European wine?

You start with the our “European Wine 101” class, that’s where! In this info-packed class we cover many topics including but not limited to:

• A brief history of winemaking in Italy, Spain, and France

• The cultural and style differences between European wines and American wines

• The geography and topography of Europe’s wine regions

• An overview of the French concept of “Terroir”

• Details on reading and understanding Italian, French, and Spanish wine labels

• A discussion on finding the biggest bang for the buck in European wine

and more! We’ll taste through a range of great examples and use the wines we are tasting to grow your understanding of the ‘old world’ of wine.

We hope you can make it to this awesome wine class!
