Can a groundhog really predict the coming season? Will it be an early spring or six more weeks of winter? Come celebrate a day of weather forecasting woodchucks with art, games and activities. Hike the park with a naturalist to see if our resident woodchucks have been out to make their own predictions. Free for all ages.

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building.

A guide will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years, and the many changes to the building over time.

This is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building and the only chance to see some of its nonpublic spaces.

Tour highlights include:

• The dramatic story of the 1878 Washburn A Mill explosion, and the other dangers that mill workers faced on a daily basis
• "The Octopus," a large machine that directed wheat into nine storage bins
• The Humphrey Manlift, a vertical conveyor belt that carried workers from floor to floor
• The Rail Corridor where hundreds of boxcars arrived each day to unload wheat and carry away flour
• Millstone plaza, originally paved with retired millstones and the location for lunchtime concerts by the Washburn-Crosby employee band in the 1920s
• Evidence of the three major fires that have damaged the building in 1878, 1928, and 1991
• The East Engine House, once home to a two-story steam engine, has been remodeled into two classrooms, while preserving the original railroad car pulling machinery

The tour includes no more than 1 mile of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

The Loft Literary Center presents a 2018-2019 Loft Mentor Series Reading with mentor V.V. Ganeshananthan and fellows Debra J. Stone and Ariane Sandford. V.V. Ganeshananthan's debut novel, Love Marriage, was longlisted for the Orange Prize and chosen one of Washington Post Book World's Best of 2008, as well as a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Pick. Debra J. Stone (creative nonfiction) co-founded and co-facilitates the Northside Writers Group that meets every second Wednesday of the month at Homewood Studios for the past ten years. Ariane Sandford’s (poetry) poems have appeared in Painted Bride Quarterly, Booth and Paper Nautilus, among others.

January 31, 2019, Thursday - Great Northern Concert on Nicollet Mall

UPDATE: Due to extreme temperatures this week, the Music On the Mall concert on Nicollet Mall, as part of The Great Northern winter celebration, scheduled for this Thursday, Jan. 31 on Nicollet Mall has been moved just one day to Friday, Feb. 1.

The concert event remains free and open to the public, and will remain between 10th and 11th Street on Nicollet Mall. The festivities begin at 4:30 p.m., with partnering Nicollet Mall restaurants opening patios to concert goers and offering food and beverage discounts. Music will begin at 6:00 p.m.

Before the concert kicks-off join us for a little taste of summer in the winter. Partnering restaurants will open their patios for the evening and we’ll have outdoor games and activities. This is one event you won’t want to miss!

Music on the Mall will feature Brooklyn-based indie pop duo Matt and Kim, known for infectious, beat-driven anthems and explosive live shows, who will perform on Nicollet Mall between 10^th and 11^th Street on Jan. 31. Matt and Kim, formed in 2004, consists of Matt Johnson (vocals/keyboards) and Kim Schifino (drums). With six studio albums to date, their 2009 song “Daylight” has reached platinum status, and the duo continues to headline sold-out tours across North America and at many major music festivals including Bonnaroo, Coachella, and the Firefly Music Festival.

Join us for an evening of conversation with Matthew Desmond, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City.

Desmond's acclaimed book draws on years of embedded fieldwork and painstakingly gathered data. Evicted won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Books Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction, among numerous others. It was named one of the Best Books of 2016 by nearly three dozen outlets, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal. In 2017, Desmond launched the Eviction Lab at Princeton University after conversations with renters and policymakers convinced him that collecting national data on eviction would help answer fundamental questions about residential instability, forced moves, and poverty in America. They hope their findings will inform programs to prevent family homelessness and raise awareness of the centrality of housing insecurity in the lives of low-income families.

This program is FREE and open to the public.
