August 20, 2015, Thursday - Architect Avenue Walking Tour with Preserve Minneapolis

Time: 6:30pm

Location: Tour meets at Architect Triangle, Northeast Minneapolis

Tickets

In 1905 a contest was held in one of the farthest corners of Hennepin County, looking for well-designed homes for the up-and-coming middle class. Major Twin Cities architects were solicited to develop affordable homes that would combine “luxury, elegance, utility, and comfort” at a maximum cost of $3,000 (including landscaping and sidewalk).  Twelve local architects submitted unique and original designs, and in the end six homes (all of which remain today) were selected and built. Thomas Lowry developed and promoted this  mini-neighborhood, which soon became known as Architect Avenue.

This tour walks about 3/4 of a mile and is guided by Kathy Kullberg.

Malamanya is a six-member Minneapolis-based Cuban Son ensemble, composed of a diverse group of musicians who share a mutual respect and enthusiasm for traditional rhythms and melodies of Latin American and Caribbean music. Their onstage energy and compositions reflect the communal, complex, and celebratory spirit prevalent in these musical genres.

Wednesday, August 26th, 6-8pm

Davina and the Vagabonds New Orleans Blues, Jazz & Soul

Davina and The Vagabonds are known for their high energy stage performances and their genre-busting mix of jazz, blues, and roots music. Led by Florida transplant Davina Sower’s powerful and evocative voice this guitar-less, horn-heavy band has the ability to make any crowd happy.

"Davina is the hardest -working Blues woman in Minnesota, but......two things remain consistent at all her shows, though: her throaty but cushiony voice, which has a sort of hardmattress comfort to it that's part Bonnie Raitt, Etta James and a little Amy Winehouse, and her band's rollicking New Orleans flavor, driven home by dueling horn players and a bayou-thick standup bass” – Chris Riemenschneider, Star Tribune

Time: 7:00pm

Location: Central Library, 300 Nicollet Mall, RKMC Meeting Room.

Join Preserve Minneapolis in celebrating the 100 year anniversary of Minneapolis' most outstanding civic monument.

On the sunlit afternoon of August 18, 1915, two thousand persons gathered to honor the memory of Thomas Lowry. Culminating five years of efforts by friends and family, the memorial was unveiled by two of Lowry's grandsons, Thomas Lowry II and Lowry Hagerman.

Thomas Lowry arrived in Minneapolis as a young man in 1867 and played a strong role in building up the community, becoming a transit and real estate magnate.

The centennial program at Minneapolis Central Library will be presented by author and historian of Minnesota streetcars Aaron Isaacs and architect and community historian Peter Sussman.

A survey of the memorial's first century will include it's design by the internationally famous architectural sculptor Karl Bitter, relocation in 1967, recent local historic designation and the prospects for ongoing conservation.
