The sixth-annual Twin Cities Startup Week (TCSW), the nation’s second-largest startup week featuring talented entrepreneurs and individuals from the startup capital of the north, has announced their 2019 schedule of events and opened ticket registration. Prominent startup leaders and notable figures, including St. Paul Mayor Melvin Cater, Target Vice President of Innovation Gene Han, Loup Ventures Managing Partner and Cofounder Gene Munster, Inc. Staff Writer Emily Canal, Geekettes Founder and Facebook Diversity Specialist Jess Erickson and other soon-to-be-announced enterprise pioneers, will headline almost 250 events throughout the week-long phenomenon from Wednesday, October 9 to Wednesday, October 16.
Earlier this year, Beta.MN, organizers of TCSW, named Casey Shultz as the Director of TCSW, the first woman to spearhead the event. This year’s event will also introduce three industry-focused tracks and three partner events, including:
Retail Track, presented by Target (Oct. 10)
Tech Track, presented by Microsoft for Startups (Oct. 15)
Healthcare Track, presented by Allina Health (Oct. 14)
Partner event Manova Summit, focusing on the progress of global health (Oct. 14 to 16)
Partner event Future Finance Forum (F3), focusing on trends moving the fintech industry forward (Oct. 11)
Partner event Food | Ag | Ideas Week, focusing on elevating and connecting Minnesota's food and agriculture ecosystem (Oct. 10 to 16)
Taking place across the Twin Cities, TCSW is a celebration of the greatest ideas, activities, people and spaces the Twin Cities has to offer. The event, presented by Target, Cargill and 3M, provides the tools and resources to help turn ideas into successful businesses and encourages companies of all backgrounds and sizes to come together and make a positive impact. This year’s event will also focus on accessibility and walkability, with most of the events taking place in downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul, and the fly-in program will once again give 50 startup enthusiasts from outside the Twin Cities the chance to experience the innovative atmosphere of the Startup Capital of the North.
“From our humble start of 15 entrepreneurs organizing only 50 events in 2014, to almost 20,000 expected registered attendees at almost 250 events in 2019, Twin Cities Startup Week continues to reflect the sensational growth of the Twin Cities’ entrepreneurial spirit over the last decade,” said Shultz. “As a former fly-in program participant, I’m honored to build on previous years’ foundations to make TCSW accessible to the broader Minnesota community.”
The 2019 program includes a variety of premier events, informative panels, networking opportunities, pitch and demo opportunities, parties and more covering a wide-variety of industries, including technology, healthcare, EdTech and training, food and agriculture, FinTech, impact and inclusion, marketing and sales, and wellness.
In 2018 Twin Cities Startup Week hosted more than 200 events and 17,000 attendees, compared to the 150 events and 12,000 attendees at the 2017 event. Innovation occurs in all communities, and therefore all communities are welcome to participate in TCSW.
To view more details on specific events happening in the Startup Capital of the North, to register for events and view the official event schedule, visit the Twin Cities Startup Week website at www.twincitiesstartupweek.com.

Excerpt from a September 24 News Release:
The Woman’s Club of Minneapolis, 410 Oak Grove Street
American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in collaboration with Main Street America, announced today that their annual Partners in Preservation campaign this year will shine a light on historic buildings and sites celebrating the contributions of women in local communities across the country.
In honor of the upcoming 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote, the Partners in Preservation program will feature 20 sites that each play a role in highlighting and raising awareness for the often unrecognized contributions of women to American history and society. From the home of Colorado’s first female African American doctor in Denver, to famed author Harper Lee’s hometown courthouse in Monroeville, Alabama, these sites celebrate the triumphs, struggles and rich history of women in America.
Beginning today through October 29, anyone can vote for their favorite Partners in Preservation: Main Streets at VoteYourMainStreet.org. The voting platform is hosted by media partner National Geographic, and Delta Air Lines is also joining as a campaign sponsor for the third year in a row. People can cast up to five votes each day of the campaign. The historic sites with the most votes will receive a share of $2 million in preservation funding from American Express, and each local partner is receiving an initial grant of $10,000 to increase public awareness of the importance of these historic places and build grassroots support for their Main Street district. Winning districts will be announced on October 30.
Included in the 20 sites vying for Partners in Preservation: Main Streets grants is The Woman's Club of Minneapolis
The Woman’s Club of Minneapolis was founded by women, for women, as a place to gather and engage in educational opportunities, civic contributions, and friendly association. The Club’s auditorium has historically hosted diverse forms of theatrical practice and public engagement, and currently fills a vital need in the Twin Cities arts community by providing a safe and accessible performance space for independent artists.
This space, formally called The Assembly, needs updates and upgrades to better serve the community. Funding will help replace the seats and repair the damaged floor—a critical first phase of a three-phase renovation.
. . . . . . . .
Partners in Preservation is a community-based partnership, created in 2006, to engage the public in preserving historic places. Over the past 13 years, the program has provided more than $28 million in support of 260 historic sites across the U.S., including 20 national parks, 14 cities, and 12 main street communities, and has engaged more than a million people through events and online voting. Partners in Preservation: Main Streets is back for its third year in a row and seeks to inspire long-term support from local citizens for sites on Main Streets across the country.
For more information and to vote daily through October 29, the public is encouraged to visit VoteYourMainStreet.org.
Ground breaking is scheduled for October 7
Eleven, Minneapolis’ first luxury condominium project designed by a world-renowned architect, has closed on $188.5 million in financing from the industry’s leading lenders; Related Fund Management as the mezzanine lender and Bank OZK as the senior lender.
Dougherty Funding LLC, whose team is led by Executive Vice President Murray Kornberg, arranged Eleven’s financing with the two largest condominium construction lenders in the country. Eleven’s financing represents the largest construction loan ever secured for a condominium project in the state of Minnesota.
“Having two of the industry’s leading capital providers approve the largest loan ever for a ground up multi-family project in the state is a testament to the vitality of this project,” Kornberg said. “The participation of these lenders in this project is a significant endorsement of Eleven and is consistent with the response we are currently seeing from buyers and the community at large.”
Eleven will be the first residential project in the city to be designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects (RAMSA), based in New York City. Luigi Bernardi of Arcadia LLC is serving as the project sponsor and co-developer and Ryan Companies is serving as co-developer, builder, and is partnering with RAMSA as the architect.
The 550-foot, 41-story Eleven tower will be Minneapolis’ tallest residential building. Local firms Peterssen/Keller Architects and Martha Dayton Design and Lakes Sotheby’s International Realty are also part of the Eleven team that is ensuring the building’s interior is as thoughtful as its exterior.
Amenities include a large landscaped terrace, a 25-yard lap pool, a private motor court, a 24/7 doorman an expansive fitness suite and yoga studio, a multi-sport court, a library, a golf simulator, a children’s splash pad, a demonstration kitchen with dining, residential and guest parking, a retail space for a restaurant, and more.
This is the first foray into the Minneapolis marketplace for Related Fund Management’s credit platform. Related Fund Management is the private equity arm of Related Companies, one of the largest privately-owned real estate firms in the United States which boasts a $60 billion+ real estate pipeline and portfolio and an employee base of over 4,000 across the United States. Related Fund Management’s credit platform has originated over $2.25 billion of loans primarily in major U.S. cities since 2015. Bank OZK’s Real Estate Specialties Group is a preeminent, market-leading lender focused primarily on senior secured commercial real estate financing in the United States.
Lakes Sotheby’s International Realty recently launched sales out of the 6,000 SF world class Eleven Sales Gallery. Project website is elevenontheriver.com
Via a September 17 announcement from Hennepin County:
On Tuesday, Hennepin County Administrator David Hough proposed a 2020 budget of $2.5 billion to the Hennepin County Board.
The operating portion of this budget totals $2 billion, an increase of $71.6 million from the adjusted 2019 budget. The capital portion totals $495.1 million, an increase of $16.1 million over the adjusted 2019 amount.
The proposed net property tax levy is $869 million, an increase of 4.75% compared to last year. Property tax covers 35% of the overall county budget. Federal and state sources, fees and services, and other revenues fund the remainder of the budget.
Hough’s proposed budget includes funding to add 36 full-time equivalent employees to the county’s existing workforce of 9,100 employees.
The budget focuses on reducing disparities that impact many residents in the areas of education, employment, health, housing, income, justice and transportation. It will also sustain the county’s progress in transforming the child welfare system to a child well-being model.

Property Values
Property tax valuations impact the property tax portion of the budget. The Hennepin County Assessor's Office assesses your property and estimates the value it would likely sell for on the open market, which is one factor used in determining your property tax. Other factors include property tax levies set by the school districts, city, county or special taxing districts that the property is in.

The Southern Theater’s AMPLIFY series begins September 20-22 with Pulling Back the Curtain: Remastered, a dance show that makes visible the marginalization of African-American people. Each of the choreographies explores themes of oppression, survival, joy, and healing. Created by the collective PBC Nation, the show features the choreographies of Gabby "The Baddie" Abram, Peace Madimutsa, Nehemiah Lucas, and Rayna Bell, and is curated by Gabriel Blackburn.
This group of artists have previously collaborated on an initial version of Pulling Back the Curtain and have continued to expand and develop the production. As PBC Nation, they have collaborated to choreograph two pieces at the beginning and end of the show. These bookends explore self-awareness and showcase individuality within a collective. The pieces were built first from conversation, which then went through stages of improvisation, setting movement material, and revising. Curator Gabriel Blackburn shared, “This came so easily because we all felt comfortable listening and speaking. When one person had the flood everyone respected that and was fully engaged.” Through each of the pieces in Pulling Back the Curtain: Remastered, as well as the additional community events and intentional talkbacks, PBC Nation creates a space for artists freedom of expression, inspires conversations, and engages a diverse audience.
Other shows in the AMPLIFY series are: A Cripple’s Dance Oct 18-20, Hit The Wall November 14-17 and Ancestral Origins: An Afrofuturist’s Exploration of Joy and Beauty. AMPLIFY was created to give voice and platform to underrepresented stories. Through movement, music, and narrative, AMPLIFY artists will use their art to share stories that represent the many voices that make up a community. “Art is a powerful way to connect,” says Acting Executive Director Janette Davis. “Our hope is that these performances will spark important conversations, open up minds, and share perspectives.”
This inaugural year of the AMPLIFY series will feature four stories from African American, disability, and LGBTQIA+ communities.
