August 23, 2017, Wednesday - Preserve Minneapolis Morning Forum at the Mill City Museum

Time: 8:00am

Locatioin: Mill City Museum, 704 S 2nd Street

Morning Forum with Preserve Minneapolis

In this month of summer vacations, we’re traveling thousands of miles to the U.S. territories to learn about how they address history and historic preservation—and how these lessons apply to Minneapolis.

Former Preserve Minneapolis board member Doug Mack visited all of the territories for his new book "The Not-Quite States of America" and will share his experiences and his findings.

We’ll look at the U.S. Virgin Islands, a former Danish colony, where tourists fly in from Copenhagen to tour Danish forts with U.S. National Park rangers. In nearby Puerto Rico, we’ll examine at the role of Spanish architecture and other historic resources in ongoing debates about colonialism and the local statehood and independence movements. And we’ll journey to the Pacific island of Guam, a major battleground of World War II, where questions linger about how to remember recent a recent, horrific past whose wounds have not yet healed.

Join us in the ADM Room on 7th Floor of the Mill City Museum. Please bring a dollar or two for coffee and sweet treats, and try to arrive a bit early in order to find a parking place and meet your friends. Street parking on South 2nd Street is usually available, and a parking lot is across the street.
