Shahiya Chitney at the Mill City Farmers Market

Shahiya Chitney debuted at the June 25 Market.  It's a family business owned by Zahra Ismael and her son Ibrahim. Zahra's recipe is influenced by Eastern tradition and fused with flavors from the heart of Oromia.  Ingredients in this hot sauce come from Co-op partners, local farmers and family in Ethiopia –mostly because the berbere from Ethiopia is more flavorful. Shahiya means appetite in Arabic.

I picked up a jar of the hotter of the two varities to liven up all kinds of dishes - anything from deviled eggs to hummus to curry - the sky's the limit.  (And no, I won't be eating it straight up - it's HOT!)

Below, Ibrahim and Alyson handle sales at the Market. Ibrahim also has two sisters, Amina and Fatuma, who help with the business.

Per Zahra, "Our product aligns with MCFM mission because just like MCFM our product aims to create a community based on diversity, sustainability and strong community values.”

Their website is currently being built out, but they plan to add a recipe blog in the future. For now, here's one to try:
Chitney Salad Dressing:
1 part chitney
1 part apple cider vinegar
2 parts olive oil
Optional - add a little honey to sweeten

In the mean time, you call follow them on Facebook.
