I hope you had the pleasure of meeting these exciting new vendors during opening day at the 2016 Mill City Farmers Market: Abrothecary, The Twisted Shrub and Cosmic Wheel Creamery. Here's a high level intro, but please be sure to click on their links to learn more about them.
As soon as I caught wind that there would be a broth and soup artisan joining the Market, it's all I could think about all winter. Look for Andrew Ikeda and his fiancée Shelby at the Abrothecary booth every other Saturday during the 2016 outdoor season. On my first visit I picked up a container of Thai Chicken Noodle soup and a jar of Ramp Pepita Pesto. Oh, the possibilities! Take a beef broth and add load it up with fresh vegetables, pasta or beans, cheeses or meat from other vendors. How about roasted turkey both as the cooking liquid for brown rice or quinoa? Look for new items on each visit.
It's no secret I'm parital to gin, so of course I had to take home a bottle of the Blueberry Lemon cocktail mixer (pardon me, cocktail catalyst) from The Twisted Shrub. "Shrubmaster General" Scott Dillon and his wife handcraft each bottle with three simple ingredients - apple cider vinegar, fresh produce, and 100% cane sugar. Other summer flavors are Strawberry Lime and Peach Habanero. When the weather gets cooler, look for Pineapple Habanero, Apple Ginger and Cranberry Clementine. If you prefer to keep it alcohol-free, you can use these mixers as a "soda exploda". ;)
Cosmic Wheel Creamery is a micro-dairy within Turnip Rock Farm in Clear Lake, WI. Plan to visit co-owner Rama Hoffpauir (pictured below on the left) every week, as the selection changes. You might find a jack cheese, cows milk manchego, Feta, quark, ricotta or cheese curds. We're enjoying a block of Lyra this week. I envisioned using it as one of four cheeses in a fancy mac & cheese dish, but it ended up shredded in fresh mixed greens salads instead - really tasty with toasted almonds and drizzles of soy sauce and toasted sesame oil!
Please join us in welcoming these new vendors. They're a perfect addition to the best Farmers Market in the Twin Cities! :D
