Disturbing Washington Post article about Farmers Markets

I found this recent Washington Post For some growers, farmers markets just aren’t what they used to be  article disturbing, and I hope this isn't happening (to the same extent) at our own Mill City Farmers Market. It focuses on a shift in visitors, who instead of purchasing produce and other products, are just hanging out to socialize and have a snack or a drink.

At the risk of sounding preachy, I'd like to remind everyone that the vendors at the Market work their butts off to bring their produce and products to the Market, and they're not getting rich - quite the opposite.  While it's really nice to have music and other things going on, the core purpose of visiting the Market should be to purchase fresh, local food and related products.  I love the community that gathers at the MCFM - both our neighbors and the vendors. It's a fun part of the weekend after spending a long week in the office.  But when we leave, we go home with a cart full of purchases.  I admit I can't always use it all and happily share items with family and neighbors, but I value the opportunity to purchase direct from the grower, canner, baker, etc., and want to do our part to assure our Market is a vibrant one.

Okay, I'm done.  Just please support the vendors!

Kim :)
