July 23 Trip to the Mill City Farmers Market

Our shopping basket from the July 23 Mill City Farmers Market.  I was planning to pick up some brats and fajita meat, along with a few other treats, but a morning storm forced the outside vendors to pack up before the market got going.  :(

Quick Balanced Meal Using Mill City Farmers Market Ingredients

Throwing together a quick and balanced meal (using just one pan) is a snap with a few simple ingredients from the Market.

This dish has wheat berries, olive oil, kale, tomatoes and curry feta cheese.  Walnuts are the only item that didn't come from the Market.

I can't believe I've never come across wheat berries until this Spring at the Market.  They are so convenient and versatile.   In the morning I put a cup or two of wheat berries in a pot of water to soak and cook them after work.  Presto - a meal base available as needed throughout the week.  The cooked grains keep perfectly stored in the fridge, and mix well with pretty much anything.

Schultz Farm at Mill City Farmers Market

Paul Schultz of Schultz Farm explains the best way to enjoy these organic Sweet Spanish Onions.  Click here for the Schultz Farm profile on the Mill City Farmers Market website.  Paul also had organic strawberry freezer jam available that day, which I'll be raving about in a future blog post! :)

Eight Ball Zucchini, Gai Lan and Chanterelle Mushrooms at Mill City Farmers Market

The Market is like a giant open air classroom with dozens of lessons taking place simultaneously.  I'm not talking about cooking or canning demos - I'm referring to what we learn one-on-one from the vendors.  It's something I can count on each and every Saturday.

For instance, on a recent visit Prairie Hollow Farm had Eight Ball Zucchini.  I wasn't aware zucchini grew in any form other than the cucumber/bowling pin shape.

Also new to me that same week, Tiny Planet Produce offered chanterelle mushrooms and Gai Lan, which according to a quick Google search is Chinese broccoli.  (I'm still fuzzy on how Gai Lan differs from broccoli rabe, broccoletti, broccolini and any other "brocco" out there...)

Braucher's Sunrise Harvest Farm at Mill City Farmers Market

Mike and Colleen Braucher of Braucher's Sunrise Harvest Farm are your source for chemical-free, 100% grass fed beef and lamb, pasture raised chickens and eggs at the Market.

Their meats and eggs are available through CSA shares, bulk orders, individual item orders by the pound, and beef 1/4's & 1/2's, and they deliver orders and shares to the Minneapolis area on a set schedule to designated drop locations. Check out their website for information.

Lamb is a little outside of my comfort zone, so I went with hamburger for Sloppy Joes.  Next time, it will be the fajita meat.

Sunrise Flour Mill at Mill City Farmers Market

You'll find organic flours, oatmeal and whole grains from Sunrise Flour Mill of North Branch at the MCFM.  I've been a fan of their fresh flaked oats since trying it for the first time last year, but until our most recent trip to the Market I hadn't taken time to get to know the people behind the product.

We hit the July 9 market at 8am sharp, allowing Marty Glanville a few minutes to spend with us before the crowds rolled in.

In addition to selling grain products, Marty and her husband, Darrold, are distributors for a number of personal flour mills and flakers, and they also offer Bread Baking classes.  And if that weren't enough, they're your source for the perfect wood-fired oven - so now you can bake pizza and bread on the patio!

Ellie's Whole Grains (GotFlax.com) at Mill City Farmers Market

Ellie of Ellie's Whole Grains(gotflax.com) explained the virtues of flax at a recent Mill City Farmers Market.  I can't speak to all the benefits Ellie rattled off, but flax has certainly kept my skin silky soft since I made it a part of my diet last year.
